A statue of the composer Franz Liszt (Imre Varga 1983) peers over the balcony of the Bishop's Palace, Pecs, Hungary..Pecs has been chosen as the 2010 European City of Culture. The city is on the southern slopes of the Mecsek Hills and has a sub-Mediterranean climate. Settled by Romans as Sopianae, it was a significant Christian settlement. Later conquered by the Ottomans, it has important Turkish architecture.
