Hungary - Pecs - The Synagogue in Pecs
Details of the Synagogue, Pecs, Hungary.The synagogue was built in 1865 and consecrated in 1869. In 1944 the city's Jews were forced into a ghetto and then deported to concentration camps. It is estimated that only about 100 or so Jews are still living in Pecs..Pecs has been chosen as the 2010 European City of Culture. The city is on the southern slopes of the Mecsek Hills and has a sub-Mediterranean climate. Settled by Romans as Sopianae, it was a significant Christian settlement. Later conquered by the Ottomans, it has important Turkish architecture.
